What the tarp can do

Is a tarp enough as a standalone shelter?

For an overnight stay in the rain, it is sufficient if you pitch the ridgeline low enough and close off one side against the wind direction. For insects or very cold nights, it is better to combine it with a tent, bivy bag, or mosquito net. Always pull the fabric taut so that no water collects in a puddle, and set it at a slight angle for runoff. Let it dry completely after your trip before folding it up to prevent mildew stains.
